Hat-tricks ahoy as Crewe and Norwich grab two each, Steve Kabba goes on the rampage for Barnet and Ayegbeni Yakubu haunts Boro

A fascinating day in the Football League, with very few fixtures that looked interesting in advance disappointing, and several that didn't look that great coming up trumps. My headlines, then...

• Double hat-tricks at Norwich, where Alan Knill's first game as Scunthorpe United's manager after defecting from Bury in midweek ended with a 6-0 shellacking in which Grant Holt scored the first three and Simeon Jackson the last three, and at Crewe, where Clayton Donaldson and Joel Grant were left facing a dressing-room wrestling bout for the match ball after both excelled in the 8-1 thrashing of Cheltenham. So far this season the Railwaymen have thrashed Barnet 7-0, drawn 5-5 at Chesterfield and lost 6-2 at Northampton. Scunthorpe at least had the excuse of being a man short for the last hour, after Paul Reid was sent off for conceding the penalty from which Holt made in 2-0.

• The curse of the returning striker, er, struck Burton Albion and Middlesbrough. Steve Kabba had a pretty good spell at Burton, where he spent the second half of last season on loan from Brentford, before signing for Barnet in the summer. Today he returned to the Pirelli Stadium with the relegation-haunted Bees desperately needing three points against the team immediately above them. Sam Winnall put Burton in front in the 11th minute, a lead they kept until half-time. But then came Kabba, who ended up with all of his team's goals in a 4-1 win. Since appointing Martin Allen they have played two, scored six and taken four points, and now have genuine hope of avoiding releagtion (particularly with Northampton, in 21st, sinking like a stone – the Cobblers' 3-1 defeat at Accrington was a 13th game without a win). At Boro, meanwhile, Yakubu scored a hat-trick to put Leicester in a winning position against his former employers, only for Stephen McManus to score from Tony McMahon's corner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

• Could Preston still stay up? Before today's impressive 2-1 win over high-flying Swansea it looked inconceivable. Now it just looks highly unlikely. This is an improvement, of sorts.

• In League Two, the top six all won. This is statistically unlikely, isn't it? For Stevenage it was a sixth win on the spin which is pretty tasty form.

• Southampton v MK Dons looked like the day's key game in League One, and it's certainly one that Jonathan Forte won't forget in a hurry. The striker, who signed for Southampton from Scunthorpe in January, came on in the 62nd minute with Saints 2-0 down, scored his first goal for the club four minutes later, added a second in seconds, and then saw Lee Barnard secure an unlikely 3-2 win in the 77th minute. Brilliant stuff.
